I can understand why many people would go for link exchange. Perhaps you don’t really know what is link exchange. Maybe someone has proposed the idea of link exchange to you, but you are contemplating if you should consider the idea. Whether you know what is link exchange or not, I will still explain for the benefit of those that do not know what it really means and represents. I will also tell you why link exchange is bad for your website.
Now, link exchange means adding someone else’s link and banner on your website while the person do the same by adding yours to his/her own website. It sounds cool right? You may have noticed some websites with so many links to other websites. That way, traffic can be driven to your website, and vice versa.
I have gotten some proposals as well for link exchange, but I had to ask questions to know if it is OK to do that. As a matter of fact, that made me to write this article, because I know there are people like me out there that would also like to know if it is healthy for their site to exchange links. So, I came up with this piece of information that could give you some bearing as to what to do.
Why Link Exchange Is Bad For Your Website
Now, do not get me wrong, while link exchange could be bad for your website, it can also be good to it, depending on how you go about it. Basically, a good link exchange can potentially drive traffic to your website. Yes, that is possible…as a matter of fact, it can be considered the easiest way of driving traffic to your website. But then, you mustn’t be blinded by the positive sides alone. Which means you have to also look at the negative sides as well.
Considering what Google says about it…(we all know that Google is the biggest Search Engine right?), then you may want to be careful how you do your link exchange. Below are some of the statements issued by Google regarding link exchange.
...Excessive link exchanges, could 'negatively impact your Site's ranking in search results.'Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your Site's ranking or Page Rank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or 'bad neighborhoods' on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links. See Source Here.
Some webmasters engage in link exchange schemes and build partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking, disregarding the quality of the links, the sources, and long-term impact it will have on their sites. This is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact your site's ranking in search results. Examples of link schemes can include:
Links intended to manipulate PageRank
Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ('Link to me and I'll link to you')
Buying or selling links that pass PageRank
What Do You Understand?
Now that we have outlined some part of Google’s view concerning link exchange, what do you understand by it? Google’s stand is obvious and clear, and violating it could adversely affect your website. Google did not say that it is totally wrong to exchange links, but you must do that in a way not to try to manipulate the search engine into ranking your site. Google also mentioned something about trading links with ‘web spammers and bad neighborhood’.
That simply means, you mustn’t allow link exchange with a site that has no importance in the eyes of the search engine, other wise, your site will be drawn or seen as the same level with that site. And that will will hurt your site badly.
Google also mentioned something about doing link exchange for the right reasons, but not primarily because of gaining PageRank. What that means is that, you must have a link that would serve and help your readers to achieve their purpose of visiting your website. You must have a relevant and helpful link that will further help your visitors. Come to thing of it, should you have a link that is questionable on your website, how do you think you will be seen by your visitors. That could give you a bad reputation for having or endorsing a link that is of low quality. And definitely that would hurt your website so so badly.
If You Must Have A Link Exchange, Consider These…
If you must have a link exchange, you must consider the follow:
- Make sure that the site you are trading link with is not a web spammer. There are so many web spammers these days that it gets very annoying when you get some unsolicited and junk comments on your website. Having a link with a web spammer will draw your site to same category in the eyes of Google.
- Be sure that the site you are exchanging link with has quality content. As we all know, unique and quality content is king in this business of website and traffic generation.
- Just like web spammers, there are other website owners that do other stuff that is in violation with Google guidelines in order to get traffic to their website. Therefore, if you have a link exchange with such sites, then you are doomed too. Now, I am talking about good reputation. Be sure that the site you are about to exchange link with has a good reputation.
- Make sure that the site’s link you have on your website will add value to your readers or visitors, otherwise you may be losing the readers you have already.
Like I said earlier on, I got proposals for link exchange, but I did not go for it. Even though at some point I was going to consider it, until I had to research to know if it is OK. In my opinion, it does not worth trying to exchange links for a website you have worked so hard for. Except if you are 100% sure that the site you are going to exchange for is OK, otherwise do not even consider doing it.
I have always try to come up with good and quality content that is geared towards helping my readers. And doing all the simple and basic stuff like sharing on social media sites. Making sure that I have a website that is user friendly and simple. With the right website design and on-page SEO and other stuff, Google will surely show some love by ranking your site accordingly.
